$50 for members; $60 for nonmembers This is a beginner’s course to help you learn to read Hebrew, with a focus on the Hebrew of the siddur, or prayer book. The course will also explore aspects of Israeli history and culture. The registration includes a copy of the textbook, Aleph Isn’t Tough.

In recent years, we have witnessed violent attacks on Jews and Jewish institutions, proposals in some countries to ban central Jewish religious practices, and anti-Jewish sentiments expressed by the leaders of far right- and left-wing political parties. The American Jewish Committee (AJC) counters antisemitism in all its guises by calling on governments to act and by organizing coalitions with other faith and ethnic groups to forge a united front against hate. Alan Ronkin will be speaking about AJC’s activities to address the growing threats of antisemitism. Breakfast will be served. Alan Ronkin, regional director of AJC Washington, D.C., has two decades of experience in the field of Jewish community relations, having worked in Los Angeles, Cleveland, Seattle, and Boston before coming to AJC. Over the course of his career he has led successful campaigns to defeat anti-Israel ballot initiatives, conducted tours of Israel for prominent non-Jewish leaders, and advocated on behalf of domestic urban concerns. In 2013, Ronkin served as policy adviser and constituent manager for Congressman Joe Kennedy III. A native of Bridgeport, CT, he earned a Master’s in public administration from the University of Southern California, and a Master’s in Jewish communal service and a Doctorate (honoris causa) in Jewish nonprofit management from Hebrew Union College. Ronkin received his B.A. from Yeshiva University.

B’nai Israel will be providing a dinner for the 35 residents of the Interfaith Works Women’s Shelter. We need your help in supplying various parts of the meal. The items can be purchased or prepared in your home. They should serve 6 to 8 people and be in disposable pans. There will be various opportunities for drop off of your items.
