B’nai Israel clergy teach our 6th grade students about the mitzvah of tefillin, including how to properly wear them. Tefillin will be available for purchase at a generous discount thanks to the generosity of the Dollye and I. Wolford Berman Educational Initiative Grant. These workshops are open to all B’nai Israel 6th graders.

We invite all new families considering Lessans Talmud Torah for the 2025-2026 school year to join us for an information session and tour with our Talmud Torah directors. There will be special activities for children while parents learn more about our program and community. The Information Session is open to all regardless of B'nai Israel membership (feel free to bring your friends)! We look forward to sharing about our curriculum, values, learning philosophy, and beautiful facility that support every child's Jewish journey.

We are pleased to return to an in-person format for the 2025 Yom Ha'Shoah Commemoration at the Bender JCC of Greater Washington on Sunday, April 27, 2:00 PM with keynote speaker Frank Cohn. We encourage you to share with your family and friends and make plans to join us. 3GDC and JCRC will co-sponsor the annual Holocaust Remembrance Day Service at Sixth and I on Wednesday, April 23 at 7:00 PM. More details are forthcoming. Other programs include: Dor L’Dor, an intergenerational program for teens & their families and educators to meet with and hear local Holocaust survivors share their living testimonies. Unto Every Person There is a Name (virtual), the public reading of Shoah victims’ names, co-sponsored by B’nai B’rith International and the JCRC. Names will be read by elected officials from the DMV and by students from local Jewish Day Schools.

B’nai Israel will be providing dinner for residents of the Interfaith Works Women’s Shelter at Taft Court. We need your help in supplying various parts of the meal. The items can be purchased or prepared in your home. They should serve 6 to 8 people and be in disposable pans. There will be various opportunities for drop off of your items.

All B'nai Israel moms are invited to a women's clothing exchange! Bring you clean clothing in good condition- you can drop off ahead of time in the Education office. $5/person to participate, drinks and light snacks will be available.

Join us as we continue our study of Berakhot, which includes a comprehensive discussion of the Shema and Amidah, the essential components of the prayer service. Newcomers are more than welcome to join us. No prior knowledge is necessary.

Come join Noar B’Yachad and Teens for a special Yom HaZikaron activity, where we’ll take a meaningful yet interactive look at Israel’s Memorial Day. Through stories, activities, and reflection, we’ll explore the importance of remembering those who sacrificed for Israel’s independence. It’s a chance to connect, reflect, and honor in a thoughtful and meaningful way.

We will commemorate Yom HaZikaron with a movie screening of We Will Dance Again. This documentary is a minute-by-minute retelling of the Supernova Music Festival Massacre, which took place on October 7th.

Join us for a community celebration of Yom HaAtzmaut as we mark Israel’s independence and reflect on its journey, משואה לתקומה (“From Tragedy to Rebirth”). Together, we’ll enjoy lively Israeli dancing, delicious Israeli foods, and participate in a collaborative art project to create a mural of hope and unity. This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate Israel’s 77th anniversary, connect with others, and share a fun, meaningful evening with the whole community.

In honor of Yom HaAtzmaut (Israel’s Independence Day), we will gather to celebrate Shabbat and our unwavering support for Israel. This program is generously sponsored by Jewish National Fund-USA and our members, Rita and Dr. Chet Stein.

Celebrate each month’s birthdays at the end of Youth & Family services with songs and treats!

B’nai Israel’s Gold Kippah Honor Society recognizes students for their proficiency in various prayers. New this year: Pre-b’nai mitzvah students will be “buddied” up with a post-b’nai mitzvah student. Older students will mentor younger students to build stronger tefillah skills while fostering friendships across grades, role modeling, and building an integrated community. Family Minyan includes spirited prayer, an engaging Torah reading, and lively conversation about the weekly Torah portion. There is no better way to prepare your child for their bar or bat mitzvah and build community connections than regular Shabbat attendance. This service is led by clergy and staff, including Rabbi Mitchell Berkowitz and Rabbi Cheryl Stone.

These services are for the post-b’nai mitzvah teens of B’nai Israel. Our teens help to organize the service and lead it, often including tefillah and discussion, with support from staff and clergy.

Designed for the youngest members of our congregational family, Tot Shabbat meets weekly to sing, learn, and pray together with Tot Shabbat leaders, Morah Juliann Goldman and Lily Pollack. Beginning July 1, this service is followed by a Family Kiddush.
