Sisterhood Member Meeting with Action in Montgomery (AIM) Housing Listening Session and Discussion
Wednesday, May 10, 2023 • 19 Iyyar 5783
10:00 AM - 12:00 PMJoin us for a brief "business" meeting. Afterwards, we are pleased to welcome our congregation's AIM delegation who will present information about rent stabilization in Montgomery County.
Did you know that almost 40% of Montgomery County residents are renters? Further, did you know that nearly half of those are considered cost-burdened, meaning they spend 30% or more of their income on housing, and thus may have difficulty paying for food and other necessities. At the same time, Covid-related emergency regulations on rent are expiring and the number of eviction proceedings and evictions are increasing.
Recognizing this, the Montgomery County Council is considering two differing rent stabilization measures, one of which would cap rent increases at 3% and the other would allow increases of 10% or more.
Why is this a concern for us at B’nai Israel? The human need for housing has been central to Jewish thought from the beginning. Our sacred texts recognize that having safe, stable housing is key to a healthy society and there are many discussions about landlords and tenants in the texts.
B’nai Israel (in partnership with Washington Hebrew Congregation) has joined Action in Montgomery (AIM) to address social justice issues such affordable housing, equity in education and equity in health care in our community. AIM is asking for our views on the two proposed rent stabilization measures, and we want to know what congregants’ think about the topic.
Please join us to learn more about the issues surrounding affordable rental housing and rent stabilization and then participate in a listening session to share your thoughts.
