9:00 AM - 1:30 PM9:00 AM – Shabbat Morning Services with Sermon by Rabbi Sizomu
After Services, During Kiddush – Lunch & Learn with Rabbi Sizomu (appx. 12:00 PM)
All are invited to enjoy Kiddush lunch after services. Lunch & Learn takes place in Fanaroff Auditorium. All are welcome to take their lunch from Kiddush in Gudelsky Hall and then join Rabbi Sizomu in Fanaroff for the Lunch & Learn, where we will hear more about his community.
Please join us on Shabbat morning, April 29, to meet Rabbi Gershom Sizomu, chief rabbi of Uganda and the first Jewish member of Uganda’s parliament. Rabbi Sizomu will deliver the sermon. He will also teach us about the Abayudaya, and tell stories of how they adopted Judaism in 1919, as well as the challenge of living as Jews in east Africa through the reign of Idi Amin and the hardships of the COVID pandemic. He will share the heart wrenching experiences of those members of his community who struggle to be accepted by Israeli authorities and the work they have done to become a known and important part of world Jewry.
Rabbi Sizomu is a Conservative rabbi and received his ordination from the Zeigler School of Rabbinic Studies at the American Jewish University in 2008. He and his wife, Tzipporah, have five children along with over a dozen nieces and nephews whom they also support.
