HAZAK - Sam & Rose Bober: A Pioneering Jewish Farm Family on the South Dakota Praire with Edward Goldstein
Thursday, March 12, 2020 • 16 Adar 5780
12:00 PM - 2:00 PMB'nai Israel CongregationLike most Jewish immigrants at the turn of the last century, Ed Goldstein’s Ukrainian grandparents, Sam and Rose Bober, landed at Ellis Island. But Sam’s ambition took him far from the normal pathway of first-generation Jewish Americans. He became a farmer, rancher, and seed developer in Newell, South Dakota. Rose kept a Jewish home in a region where they were the only Jews for miles. Their story includes Sam’s personal meetings with Presidents Coolidge, Roosevelt, and Eisenhower, their visit to pre-war Moscow, his service on the Federal Farm Credit Board, and his run for Congress in 1950.
