One Year Later: The Hebrew University & the Israel-Hamas War With Rector Tamir Sheafer of Hebrew University

Monday, October 21, 2024 19 Tishrei 5785

12:00 PM - 1:30 PM

In the months following October 7th, the Hebrew University found itself with over 35% of its 28,000-member campus community sent to the reserves, housing thousands of displaced people, and providing emergency services to students, faculty, their families and more. The Hebrew University now finds itself faced with another challenge, academic boycotts and intellectual isolation, as the boycott, divestment, and sanctions movement (BDS) has gained strength across the globe.

Please join us for lunch/dessert in the sukkah with Rector Tamir Sheafer of the Hebrew University, where he will share updates on the Hebrew University since October 7th, the evolution of academic boycotts and intellectual isolation on Israeli universities, and how the Hebrew University is meeting these challenges as it approaches its centennial year in 2025.

Tamir Sheafer a Professor in the Department of Political Science and the Department of Communication and Journalism, and the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences. My research focuses on actor-centered perspectives in political communication, such as information processing and personalization; on the role of political value proximity between actors; on political narratives; and on developing new methods for automated textual analysis based on a combination of topic modelling, deep learning and expert coding.  Professor Sheafer serves on the editorial boards of Political Communication, Public Opinion Quarterly, The International Journal of Public Opinion Research, and Media Frames (in Hebrew). His research has appeared in leading journals such as Communication Research, Journal of Communication, Political Communication, Public Opinion Quarterly, The International Journal of Public Opinion Research, International Journal of Press/Politics; Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly, Journal of Conflict Resolution, Comparative Political Studies, Political Psychology and Journal of Peace Research, and Journalism.
