HAZAK: Can Robots Be Jewish? And Other Pressing Questions of Modern Life with Amy Schwartz

Thursday, April 7, 2022 6 Nisan 5782

1:00 PM - 2:00 PMIn-Person, Fanaroff Auditorium

In Jewish tradition, there's never just one answer to a question—and disagreement can lead to the greatest wisdom. Questions, such as, “Are there things that can’t be forgiven?”; “Do Jews believe in an afterlife?”; “Is democracy a Jewish idea?”; and “Can Robots be Jewish?” are answered by rabbis who span the spectrum of Jewish thought—from Humanist and Reform to Orthodox and beyond—in a new book based on Moment Magazine’s popular Ask the Rabbis feature. What results is a deep interrogation of Jewish text, law and commentary and an unparalleled look at the breadth, creativity and continued relevance of the Jewish tradition. Join Amy E. Schwartz, editor of Can Robots Be Jewish? And Other Pressing Questions of Modern Life, as she discusses her adventures editing the Ask the Rabbis column and explores the rabbis' answers—and our own—on some of today’s most pressing issues.

Amy E. Schwartz is Moment Magazine’s Opinion and Book Editor, as well as editor of the magazine’s popular “Ask the Rabbis” section. Schwartz was a longtime editorial writer and op-ed columnist at The Washington Post, covering education, science and culture. She has also worked at Harper’s, The New Republic and The Wilson Quarterly. She is president of the non-denominational Jewish Study Center in Washington, D.C. and speaks and runs workshops on topics of Jewish commentary, psalms and literature nationwide.
