Each year, our Lunch & Learn group explores a compelling Biblical text — not only “unpacking” the more obvious meaning of the words and ideas but also how they may interface with our own personal concerns and values. During 2024-2025, we will continue our study of the Book of Samuel. Our focus will be on three pivotal characters: Saul, first king of ancient Israel and a prisoner of his own inner turmoil; his son, Jonathan, caught in tragic crossfires of power and love; and David, the boy-shepherd of many talents, who ultimately changes the trajectory of Israelite history.
The Book of Samuel is a treasure-trove of family intrigue, politics, religion, national hopes and tensions. It is a dramatic backdrop to the development of a people in its land — an ever-timeless text that speaks to our own era and reflects a gamut of human emotions and experiences. As our Lunch & Learn “regulars” will attest, our class is interactive and our discussions are lively. Newcomers are always warmly welcomed, as together we discover anew the power and beauty of the Bible.
