March 27–30: Shabbaton and Competition in Westchester County, New York
Cost: $175 registration fee (includes the course and the registration fee for the Shabbaton in March; transportation is separate)
Students develop arguments in response to an ethical case using a sourcebook of curated Jewish texts. This year’s theme explores the legalization and regulation of gambling. The advent of online gambling and in particular the legalization of sports betting apps in many locales—has led to a surge in gambling activity and brings a renewed sense of urgency to these questions. At the competition, teams present and defend their arguments before a panel of expert judges.
Hadar’s Maimonides Moot Court Shabbaton is the culmination of this course. The Shabbaton is in Sleepy Hollow, NY (Westchester) from Thursday–Sunday, March 27–30. The registration includes accommodations, all meals (kosher), snacks, and excursions during the weekend away. The competition itself is held on Sunday at the conclusion of the Shabbaton, and this is what we will prepare for in all of the Zoom sessions lead up to the weekend.
